Questionnaire:
David Natale

Candidate, Mayor (City of Vaughan)

Why are you running for election?

Vaughan council is in desperate need of wholesale change and in its overall political landscape. I know I can be the catalyst of this change and move Vaughan forward with positive results.

What do you think is your most appealing quality to voters?

Honesty and leadership. As I state on my website, I'm not a career politician which I think is an advantage. Vaughan's image is tarnished and my election is the first step to rebuilding our city's once proud and envious image. People want to 'feel good' and proud about their elected officials.

If you're elected, what will be your main priorities?

Sustainable growth, a first tier hospital, commuter congestion issues, more local policing and possibly re-visit Vaughan's Official Plan. These are my priorities, but as mayor priorities should take into consideration public feedback. Therefore, ranking or hierarchy of priorities are open to change.

Will you be accepting corporate donations to your campaign, and if so, will accepting this money affect your candidacy?

No. I'm not accepting any sort of donation. Also, I will not post signs as they become an eyesore on our lawns and public lands. My campaign will be facilitated primarily via my website, the public meet/greet sessions recently approved by council, word of mouth and perhaps most importantly, media such as 148.ca.

What should we do to increase voter turnout from 38%?

Try and eliminate the apathy that exists with today's voters and provide more and/or better voting methods. Perhaps at times voting is inconvenient, but mostly people don't vote because there's the belief their vote won't make a difference. The sentiment that all politicians are the same and only care about themselves, the wealthy and businesses is widely accepted and unfortunately entrenched.

Residents have told me they believe their voice goes unheard in our local council. There currently exists a big feeling of disconnect with City Hall. This will take time to change but the first step is to elect new people to council. As mayor I will try to maximize transparency and openness within our city in all departments.

Do you support the renaming of Highway 7, and if so, what would you rename it to if it was your sole decision?

No. I think it's somewhat of an exercise in futility. You can rename the road but residents will always refer to it as Hwy 7.
