Candidate, Councillor (Ward 2, City of Vaughan) |
Why are you running for election? |
The decision to run for Ward 2 Councillor in Vaughan was in large
measure a pursuit of passion for my community. After majoring in
politics for four years at Queen's University I felt that not only were
there strong indicators that our community was ready for a truly fresh
approach, but also that I was more than ready to accept the challenge of
working together as part of the team to carry our community forward.
Having lived and worked in Woodbridge my entire life, I am familiar with
the community and even more so with the coming generation of families
and homeowners.
What do you think is your most appealing quality to voters? |
The most appealing quality to voters is the combination of my youth, energy
and genuine desire to revitalize representation of the Woodbridge community
and to work hard to improve the quality of life for Vaughan. As our team
continues to engage with residents we consistently hear positive and
encouraging remarks with regard to my candidacy and what I have to offer to
Vaughan Council; new blood and a fresh perspective capable of carrying our
community forward.
If you're elected, what will be your main
priorities? |
As we continue to engage the community one message is clear: "do not forget
the people that put you there." I cannot express how much I take this advice
to heart. One of the most fundamental aspects of the job which I seek to
restore is the direct, personal and honest manner of representation. I
understand that as Councillor there will be many tests of my character in
how I will deal with issues as they arise; while I do not promise by any
means a decision that would appeal to all participants, I do promise that
I will do everything I can and be as honest about the process as possible.
To speak of another goal that is close to home is my desire to work with
local residents to improve the Woodbridge Avenue and Market Lane area. There
have been several news reports about my proposal for a Business Improvement
Association (BIA) along Woodbridge Avenue which are available at my site
(www.danielsalvatore.ca).
This part of our community has the potential to be a real focal point for
community and cultural events as well as a thriving business sector. A BIA
is exactly the instrument to take us there.
Will you be accepting corporate donations to your campaign, and if so,
will accepting this money affect your candidacy?
Yes, I will be accepting corporate and union donations. I established what
my campaign was to be about before I filed my paperwork in December and have
not, nor do I intend to deviate from that plan. My number one obligation
will be to the residents of Ward 2 above any other.
What should we do to increase voter turnout from 38%? |
Increasing voter turnout is a challenge that needs to be addressed. The most
important factor in encouraging people to vote is giving voters a real
alternative to the status quo. Candidates must engage the community and give
them a reason to vote. By the end of the campaign our team is projected to
have knocked on over 10,000 doors; through such actions combined with other
measures we are encouraging voters to cast their ballot for change.
Do you support intensified development within your ward?
Ward 2 is an older community in comparison to other parts of our city. As
such, there is little room in the way available for building new communities
from the ground up as is scheduled to be done north of Woodbridge in Ward 1.
However, our city as a whole must accommodate for growth as the province of
Ontario and region of York have mandated that Vaughan must grow by over
200,000 more people by 2031.
This growth will occur in many forms including intensification within Ward 2.
A benefit of such growth is the increased potential for the improvement
of existing services such as community centres, parks and seasonal services
to name a few. The challenge will be to ensure that any form of
intensification has the community at the forefront of any decisions being made.
