Questionnaire:
John Ross Harvey

Candidate, Regional Councillor (City of Vaughan)

Why are you running for election?

I am running because the traffic issues of our city are a disaster waiting to become an epidemic of fatalities. Common courtesy and common sense are often forgotten by many motorists, but they are not the only users of our roads; cyclists, pedestrians, people with disabilities, transit vehicles all need to share the road.

Knowledge of the cross walk signals adding time to walk across is important because the signals are designed for cars to cross, not people, we need to fix that. Thirty two seconds to cross eight lanes is an invitation to disaster. Roads need to accommodate people and cars, not only cars. Crosswalks need to be used properly, the timer isn't an indication you have time left, it means your time was up when it began, the walk signal is the safest time to cross, timers and red hands are not a safe period.

Enforcement of the cell phone and texting laws needs to be visible, the abusers are still using them, and that puts us all in jeopardy.

What do you think is your most appealing quality to voters?

I am not spending money to waste on signs, door handle cards, flyers or any other printed material destined to enter your blue bins. I am campaigning with social media outlets like Twitter, Facebook, and my web page. I will meet you at the designated meet and greet functions, words are better from the person, than from the sign you probably will ignore anyway. The majority of people will not answer you for door to door calls, so why should I waste your time by annoying you in that manner. The meet and greet functions will serve that purpose quite well.

I may never have held a public office, but have been a director for our ratepayers, chair of our traffic calming, director for the auto racing club which holds the Toronto Indy race, and am currently a vice president of a collectors club. If people want change, they have to change who they vote for.

If you're elected, what will be your main priorities?

Obviously to control our traffic situation as stated above, we don't need more pedestrians to be hit, more streets to be gridlocked, or transit to be delayed, we need to build and improve roads which work for everybody. We do have some that do work well, but we also have Rutherford at Vaughan Mills which clearly does not work.

Will you be accepting corporate donations to your campaign, and if so, will accepting this money affect your candidacy?

I will not accept corporate donations at all, so it will not affect my candidacy.

What should we do to increase voter turnout from 38%?

Talking to people you know, word of mouth, if your friend says they won't vote, convince them they can make a difference. The greater turnout of people that want to change, the better chance there is for us candidates to earn a seat.

Do you support the renaming of Highway 7, and if so, what would you rename it to if it was your sole decision?

I think a rename to Avenue 7 or something ridiculous like "six" is a waste of time and money. It has been Highway 7 or renamed Regional Road 7 for so long, it will always be 7.
