Five Essential Mother-in-law Tips for Mother's Day

By Sally Shields, best-selling author of The Daughter-in-Law Rules: 101 Surefire Ways to Manage (and Make Friends with) Your Mother-in-Law!

It's Mother's Day! These simple yet essential strategies will help your mother-in-law feel welcome, special and appreciated this Mother's Day. Okay, let's begin.

1. Call your mother-in-law "Mom".

Although this might take some getting used to, it is well worth the effort. Not only It will create a sense of family but it will also help remind you who is the boss. (Hint: it isn't you - at least we want her to feel like the boss on her special day!)

2. Send your mother-in-law cards and flowers.

Pick out a Hallmark with a heartfelt sentiment but make sure that you have your husband pen it from the both of you so that she doesn't get the mistaken impressions that her son has forgotten her special day! And be sure to call 1-800-Flowers well in advance so that those roses are sure to arrive on time - not three days after the fact - no, no, no!

3. Call your mother-in-law early in the morning.

This seems like something that would be best left to your sense of spontaneity, but do not take this lightly. Say that you just called to wish her a happy Mother's Day... and make sure to ask her how she's feeling as well.

4. Tell your mother-in-law what a great job she did as mother.

During your call to Mom, slip in what a great job she did raising her son. This will most likely bring her to tears and that is great! Just remember that someday you too will perhaps raise a son and can you think of a more wonderful compliment than that? Surely not! So, speaking of compliments...

5. Compliment your mother-in-law.

Remember, your mother-in-law can be just as self-conscious as you are, so, take the time to tell her how pretty, young, healthy, thin, she looks, and how much you like her hairstyle. She'll be really flattered and will bring you that much closer to becoming friends. ENJOY!
