Interview: THe BAcksliders
What got this band together and started in this business?
We started THe BAcksliders to make good music for bad people.
Who writes and produces all the material for the band?
Kim, Jason, and I (Chris) all contribute to the writing. I produced the last
two albums with Jeff Halbert (St. Vincent, The Lemurs).
The band played in front of or with any acts our readers would know from
the mainstream?
We have played with The Toadies and The Gourds.
Where can people access your music on the web?
You can download our new album free at www.thebacksliders.com
where you can also purchase the previous two albums. oh, and of course on MySpace.
Any embarrassing moments on stage?
Jason fell off the stage a couple of times but I don't think he was
embarrassed. I ripped the back of my pants open a month ago on stage.
Any good stories you want to tell us?
Don't smoke pot in your hotel room in Ames, Iowa. That is all.
Who is the bands musical influence?
We are heavily influenced by the The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Badfinger,
all the old stuff.
How did the band get together?
Kim and I were playing in a band called The Shimmers and we decided to form
our own band and get married. Jason (my brother) just joined us last year.
What is your musical background like?
Jason and I used to play in hardcore bands in the nineties. Kim was in a band
called Vibrolux who was signed to Polygram for a while. Taylor, our drummer
was in Young Heart Attack and Polyphonic Spree.
Any other members in your family that are musicians?
Both of our sons and all of our parents play something.
What is the TOP reason why you want to play music?
It is our calling.
What's your stance on file swapping?
Too late to cry about it now. The only way bands will beÊ able to make money
in the future is by playing lie, and that's where we shine, so.
What is the process of making a CD?
First you have to come up with good songs. Then you demo the hell out of them
until you find a feel. Once they are where you want 'em. Cut 'em lie as
possible. Mix, master and repeat.
How do you get the word out about your music?
Contact every media outlet possible and tour as much as we can.
How is your local response to your music?
We won the Dallas Observer Music Award for best blues act in 2007 and Best
Hard Rock act in 2008 so good.
What is the farthest you have traveled for a gig?
We drove from Dallas to New York to Boston to Dallas in five days.
What tune on the CD are you most proud of?
"Twisted".
