Interview:
International Farmers

What got this band together and started in this business?

Two longtime friends, Danny Primavera and Jeremy Odom, started the band in Atlanta in 2001 to pursue their love of reggae and various other genres of music. Music with a positive message was the original goal and still rings true 8 years later.

Who writes and produces all the material for the band?

Danny writes the music and lyrics then brings these ideas to the band. From there everyone adds their own unique touch to the song and then it becomes an International Farmers song.

Has the band played in front of or with any acts our readers would know from the mainstream?

Rebelution, Nikhil Korula, Tomorrows Bad Seeds, The Expendables, DeLa and C-Money from Slightly Stoopid, SOJA, John Brown's Body, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad

Where can people access your music on the web?

Any embarrassing moments on stage?

Di Piazza's, Long Beach about 3 years ago - Lara drank two glasses of Grand Marnier, played the show drunk, and then went to a booth in the audience, passing out.

Any good stories you want to tell us?

There are so many good people we've encountered and amazing stories to be told. Every audience on the road has shown us so much love and appreciation for the positive vibes we bring to their ears. Traveling to new places, meeting new people, and sharing with old friends keep us stoked to play the next show!

Who is the band's musical influence?

Every member of the band brings a different musical influence while reggae is the glue that keeps the songs together.

How did the band get together?

Danny and Jeremy (guitar/vocals and bass) moved to Southern California to find similar minded musicians. Preston (drums) was found through an Australian internet friend, Jamie and Lara (keys and vocals) were found at a Super Bowl Party through mutual friends, and Brian (sax) arrived through a stand in drummer.

What is your musical background like?

Everything from Reggae to Rock, Punk, Funk, Hip Hop, Jazz, R&B, and Blues.

Any other members in your family that are musicians?

Preston's (drums) father, Juan Nelson, has played bass for Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals for the past 16 years and is known as one of today's most talented bassists. Jamie's (keyboards) father, Byx Bullock, is a professional musician in Southern MD, leads a band, and has owned a music store there for the last 45 years. Danny Primavera's (Vox, guitar) father played accordian, while both parents played guitar.

What is the TOP reason why you want to play music?

Music is Life!

What's your stance on file swapping?

Share love, share music, spread the good vibes through music, but come to a show and support the bands you love!

What is the process of making a CD?

Writing/Recording an album you mean? Writing the songs takes place sometimes over years or over a matter of minutes. Rehearsing the songs and playing them live is next while analyzing and perfecting the songs becomes a part of this process. Finding the right recording studio and engineer comes after that and recording begins. Recording consists of demoing tracks, recording tracks, mixing, and mastering. How quickly recording takes depends on the budget. Actual duplication of the CD takes around a month to complete.

How do you get the word out about your music?

Monthly e-mail newsletters, flyers, mailing lists, MySpace, Facebook, word of mouth.

How is your local response to your music?

Local response is always very positive, although it is our favorite to play those out of town gigs! Everyone we've played for always comes back for more.

What is the furthest you have traveled for a gig?

Clear Lake, Iowa or Red Lodge, Montana. They were both pretty far.

What tune on the CD are you most proud of?

Too many songs competing for that crown... a few of our fav's are Slow Down, Silly Bird, Only Questions, Roll, and Open Road.
