Interview: Shola from Divisible

What got this band together and started in this business?

Albert and I both had a true passion for music. Personally, I felt that if I could inspire women the way I had been inspired by artists like Joni Mitchell, Tori Amos, the Indigo Girls, and Ani DiFranco, I would have done something good with my life.

Who writes and produces all the material for the band?

The music is written by me, and produced by the band together.

Has the band played in front of or with any acts our readers would know from the mainstream?

We've played with Sara Bareilles, who had a hit called "Love Song" and Craig Wedren from Shudder to Think, who is a favorite band of mine from the DC post-punk days.

Where can people access your music on the web?

Any embarrassing moments on stage?

Of course! But isn't it bad to tell about them? Well, the most harmless was when I broke a string during the first song of a set, and had forgotten my backup guitar. Usually, we could just borrow from another band... but it was electronica night. No guitars in the house at all. Other embarrassing things have happened since then, but for the sake of my ego I'd better keep them to myself.

Any good stories you want to tell us?

The best thing that has happened to the band is when we were invited to play a festival called PopKomm in Germany, kind of like South by Southwest here. It was fabulous, and we got to stay in these beautiful hotels, we had a driver and roadies... fantastic. We played in Berlin, Hamburg, and Cologne, and it was one of the best times of my life.

Who are the band's musical influences?

We have so many, but right now we lean towards PJ Harvey, TV on the Radio, and Peter Gabriel. There are a ton more, but those kind of give an idea of what we're going for.

How did the band get together?

We actually met on Craigslist!

What is your musical background like?

Albert is a little more trained than I am - and I think it shows. That's why he's such a vital part of my songwriting, and the true backbone of the band. I grew up playing music - I played violin, piano, and flute as a child - but I've never really had any formal theory training as an adult.

Any other members in your family that are musicians?

My dad sings off-key to songs on the radio, but that's about it.

What is the top reason why you want to play music?

To inspire other people, so that they can inspire other people... not only to create art, but to do some humanitarian good in the world.

What has been your best show?

Oooh, that's hard to say. We played a coffeeshop in Lompoc, CA on tour when our EP came out, and a woman was pregnant in the audience. She wrote us later and said that the baby kicked the entire time we played, and so now she plays our EP to him to quiet him down. And we played another show, just a local show, where the club was packed, the audience was totally into it, and there was this feeling of collective excitement from all the people. Who can say which of those is better?
