Mörglbl is an instrumental progressive metal band from Frances that is layered with Jazz,
and Fusion overtones. As if Frank Zappa, Steve Vai and Freak Kitchen had a love
child from France. The fifth album from Mörglbl is called Brutal Romance. An 11 track
quirky attack of absolutely insane musicianship melded into poppy, catchy, and heavy songs.

Guitarist Christophe Godin is a complete madman on this album, showcasing for his love an
appreciation for fellow prog metal phenomenon, Mattias Eklundh of Freak Kitchen.
Songs such as Brutal Romance, Le Surfer d’Argentine, and Metal Khartroom show
off some of the faster, heavier aspects of the band. While other songs like Gnocchis On The
Block, Golden Ribs, and Fidel Gastro are great mid-tempo rockers.

The whole album is filled with nerdy, proggy technicality that future guitar virtuosos will fall in
love with. My personal favorite song on the album is Glucids In the Sky, which not only
features death-defying guitar skills, but very funky and killer bass lines along with some very
proggy but tasteful drums to match all the styles showcased in the song.

Brutal Romance is not for the weak of heart or just the average prog fan. It really digs deep
into its jazz metal flavors and played with extreme time signature changes on the turn of a dime.
While the album it technical. It can sometimes feel like it is one sided towards technicality just
be description, but its not until you dig deep you'll hear all the underlying tones of pop and
catchiness.

For anyone who is looking for some catchy, jazzy prog metal, while being absolutely
impossible to cover without 20 years under your belt at your instrument, Brutal Romance
should be right up your alley. I know it is for me.
