Phnom Penh Katari Hotel
Phnom Penh, Cambodia

The Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh is a more modern delight than any Hollywood movie will credit it. You know this is a paradise from the plethora of fast growing towers that may be smaller than the gargantuan monsters of the west, but many are flourishing hotels with comparable rooftop pools and restaurants. An incredibly affordable destination with more than enough choice when you give yourself enough time to research. So where did I go?

Boeung Keng Kang I. My significant other says it's a bit of a misspell compared to how it's pronounced, but it's a district full of services for travellers like myself. I chose the relatively new Phnom Penh Katari Hotel for its amenities, and the draw of an exercise facility on paper was a major factor.

Like other hotels in the vicinity, you can arrange a shuttle from the airport (which can be a very busy route). We chose this option because we had a complex route with stops along the way, making it easy for a driver originating from the hotel to reliability complete the journey at the hotel. Such a blessing not having to worry about the ride, though parking was ample and available.

The check-in process was not particularly unique ("hand me your payment card and I will straighten out the details"), but the resort feel of the reception area was appreciated after a long, stressful flight. The staff were on the whole a polite crew, who understood and heeded to my various requests in cordial fashion. This country is famous for its beautiful hospitality.

Although functional, the state of the room looked a bit older than it actually was; signs of wear and tear added elegance, but were also noticeable. An absurd amount of seating and storage for a couple like ours spending a little vacation time, but we were happy. The bathroom was very modern, with a high ceiling and a shower stall with full view of the bed through a clear pane of glass - plus a waterproof curtain in case you feel less sexy than you expected to be.

The included breakfast, like other services, was luxurious. Door handlers, waiting staff, a kitchen staff ready to cook eggs for you on demand. It was an awesome experience considering the formalities, and I particularly appreciate the stir fried complex Chinese dishes offered above the usual morning fare. Who thought bok choy and sweet and sour fish were brekkie? Luxurious.

Oh, and a rooftop pool. Did I mention the pool?
