Eat your heart out, David Suzuki.
The kind of urban planning in the reclaimed island of Tsukishima (literally "Moon Island") looks at least aesthetically pleasing for the "on the foot" commuter that I am. The sidewalks are wider than the roads that border it, to cite examples. And moderate to high density housing had been built in the decades before that stretch straight through a quiet park and river.
For a person getting used to urban sprawl and western families confined to lonely old mansions, this is something I particularly envy.
Forget about becoming "green" or being a "little green". This neighbourhood seemed green. Period.
Bikes lined the sidewalk between the subway station and the bridge. For Sunday, the traffic was surprisingly light. The town contains a population more than a Toronto suburb yet the "one person one car" hoarding I was so accustomed to doesn't seem to exist here.
There is one small gas station in the strip I visited. With two small pumps.
No one was complaining so passionately about gas prices. And it doesn't require a car to commute downtown. Yes, I'm full of envy.
