The kind of urban planning in the reclaimed
island of Tsukishima (literally "Moon Island") looks at least
aesthetically pleasing for the "on the foot" commuter that I am. The
sidewalks are wider than the roads that border it, to cite examples.
And moderate to high density housing had been built in the decades
before that stretch straight through a quiet park and river.

Forget about becoming "green" or being a
"little green". This neighbourhood seemed green. Period.

Bikes lined the sidewalk between the subway
station and the bridge. For Sunday, the traffic was surprisingly light.
The town contains a population more than a Toronto suburb yet the
"one person one car" hoarding I was so accustomed to doesn't seem to
exist here.

There is one small gas station in the
strip I visited. With two small pumps.

No one was complaining so passionately about
gas prices. And it doesn't require a car to commute downtown. Yes,
I'm full of envy.
