Romney tax returns on the block by both parties

Mitt Romney was absorbing more verbal punches about his reticence to release more than two years of tax returns as Democrats and fellow Republicans pelted him with comments.

Leaders of the Democratic National Committee gathered for the press to sing in harmony, "What are you hiding, Mitt boy," a song allegedly written especially for the topic by Neil Diamond as a contribution to President Obama's reelection campaign.

The Sunday-morning network and cable TV news shows were sprinkled with Republican critics.

George Will said, "Why didn't Romney clear this stuff up? He knew he was running for President and he knew that I would find the most peculiar words to intellectualize my thoughts and extend my sentences to be more fluent than any other conservative talking about this subject or any subject."

Other comments from Republicans include:

"Release ten years worth and make those Democrats see how far you can stretch a few million dollars."

"If you are worried about the cost of the ink to print all of the returns, let me know, I will take up a collection."

"Your main accountant called and said you should give them a lot of advance notice if you want even one more year released because each year's returns are about six pounds of paper."

Mitt's dad, George, released a dozen years of taxes when he ran for President in the 1980s.

"George Romney," said a Republican leader who asked we not print his name or show up for his weekly summer barbecue at his home in Georgetown, D.C., "made nothing compared to Mitt, so it was easy for him to make so many years of taxes public. Mitt's finances are complicated and complex, if you will let me be redundant. Mitt has money all over the place in banks and real estate and accounts in other countries and he still spends a lot of money trying to get the big prize from Publishers Clearing House. Those are deductions. He also gives a lot of money to the Mormon church."

A top figure of the Mormon church said, "Mitt's charitable side has helped pave some of our Mormon buildings with pearl. We would have had to use swine were it not for Romney contributions but thanks to his generosity we were able to put pearls before swine."

The question of why Romney is being stingy with his old tax records is pause for pondering, some think. Speculation that he is hiding something from the public has grown simply because he won't let the public see details about his financial doings. Some say Romney is worth twice as much as has been suggested and some suggest that he is worth thrice as much as the suggestions suggesting he is worth more than suggested.

President Obama has released six years of tax returns, which many in the Romney camp have laughed about while looking at them.

One Romney aide said, "Obama's returns from before he was President are funnier than a Jim Carey movie." The aide had to stop and catch his breath after laughing and then he continued. "There were only five places in the earnings and after takeout, well, it was hilarious. It was less than the governor pays the guys who keep his driveway hosed down."
