President Obama is only slightly ahead in nationwide polls after getting a bounce from the
Democrats' convention.

A point or two behind, Mitt Romney has been busy answering questions about what he said at a
fundraiser last May. His speech was secretly taped and it went public the other day, leaving people
to believe that the Republican candidate is not concerned with 47 percent of the people in the
country that would never vote for him.
Romney came to his own defense after the tape was released.
A Romney aide said, "Mitt didn't mean what he meant, he meant to say that he means differently
than it sounds."
Romney admitted he could have said what he said more eloquently but he defended what he meant, not
what it sounded like when he said what he was meaning to say.
The Obama camp jumped right on the incident.
An Obama aide said, "Romney dismissed almost half of the country's population, saying they are
dependent on the government and freeload by not paying income taxes and more bad things about this
group, which includes seniors, sick people, sick seniors, people who pay payroll tax and social
security and people who make in a year what Romney had in his pocket when he made the speech."
Romney's campaign did a reboot just before the tape was released. His new theme emphasizes his
compassion for the middle class. The reboot was in the works before the tape of his damaging speech
was released.
A Romney aide said, "We worked on a number of slogans for the reboot. We want to make sure people
know Romney is trying to help everyone, even those who don't need or want help. In fact that was
one of our new slogans but it didn't fit on small signs."

Reporters searched for conservatives who did not work for FOX News to see if he had anyone
supporting him on the right.
When called by phone, Rick Santorum laughed and hung up.
