Interview:
The Ninteenthirteen Massacre

What got this band together and started in this business?

I was looking for someone to play with, and this was the most pissed off band I could find around. I think that what really got us working together is our being very open minded to experimentation. We want to play music that we like, but we don't want to be constrained in any way.

Who writes and produces all the material for the band?

All members of the band. Usually, one of us comes up with the main idea - sometimes the whole song, at least for his instrument. Then we add all the rest and make adjustments where needed. So, we wrote songs starting from the bass line, from the guitar, or from the drums. We are all very creative.

Has the band played in front of or with any acts our readers would know from the mainstream?

If that happened, we were too drunk to remember.

Actually we played with Nickelback, but we are ashamed of it, and we don't want to let other people know.

Where can people access your music on the web?

www.1913.us

Any embarrassing moments on stage?

Several. Especially when the singer of Nickelback came back on stage and - oh, wait. Never mind.

Any good stories you want to tell us?

Recently, I slept through every single minute of a Mastodon concert. I had some pretty wild dreams.

Who are the band's musical influences?

Pretty much everything from the '60s on.

How did the band get together?

I've been playing for more than 10 years, almost all kinds of music. I played pop/light rock, thrash, grunge, industrial, some blues. I even played classic jazz from the 30s in a big band for a couple of years. I still play in the streets with a few friends, whenever we have the time. I like almost all sorts of music, and as long as you don't care about money and just want to play, the possibilities are endless.

Any other members in your family that are musicians?

My brother was an excellent piano player, with a degree from a good music school. But he's not playing anymore.

What is the top reason why you want to play music?

To blow off the steam. But seriously, I come up with cool beats and time signatures all the time: why should I not play? And, I like to constantly push my limits.

What has been your best show?

Christmas fundraising re-enactment of Puss in Boots, in 1994. We kicked ass.
