Interview: Chad Darou

What got you started in this business?

I have been playing since I was 8 years old and have been in a number of bands in the 32 years since I started. The desire to be on stage performing the music I love is what got me started.

Who writes and produces all the material?

Well I have written alot of the material and produce everything myself. WE do cover material from all genres of music though.

Have you played in front of or with any acts our readers would know from the mainstream?

Bill Keith, Bill Harrell, Frank Wakefield, Gibson Brothers, Dan Tyminski, Lonesome River Band, Ray Legere, Del Reeves, Bill Anderson, Doug and Willa Porter and the Abrams Brothers.

Where can people access your music on the web?

Facebook and MySpace.

Any embarrassing moments on stage?

Well there was this time while on stage with my families band The Atkinsons that while being introduced my mother-in-law referenced the shirt I was wearing saying it looked like a sofa from the 60s, at which point an older lady in the audience shouted out I'll sit on him!

Any good stories you want to tell us?

I have so many good stories from the 32 years I've been playing that it wouldn't be fair to tell just one and I don't think you've got time to hear them all.

Who are your musical influences?

Tony Rice, Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Rob Wasserman, David Grisman, et cetera.

What is your musical background like?

Pretty vast really. If you look at the bluegrass names I've played with and then throw into that band and orchestra all through middle and high school, as well as a handful of rock, jazz, blues and country bands throughout the years I'd say that pretty well sums it up.

Any other members in your family that are musicians?

None yet but hopeful for our kids.

What is the top reason why you want to play music?

Next to my wife and children it's my life!

What has been your best show?

Boy they've all been really awesome. But to point out a few of the top shows: Onstage at the Wind Gap Festival with Bill Harell, onstage at Del Rossi's Trattoria with Stan and Dan Tyminski, any number of shows I played with the band Summit backing Bill Kieth and Frank Wakefield, onstage at the Thousand Islands Bluegrass Festival with the Lonesome River Band, and onstage at the Mannville Inn with Del Reeves.
