Any embarrassing moments on stage?

The one that comes to mind first was at a small show in Clinton, Mississippi with my old, old band that I was in during late high school/early college. I was a much more energetic performer back then and I used to jump all over the place.

In the last song I jumped pretty high and landed at a really weird angle so my feet fell out from under me. I ended up cracking my head on the rim of the bass drum. There was a gash on the back of my head and I was kinda dazed for the rest of the night haha!

Any good stories you want to tell us?

Tons. I couldn't possibly only pick one.

Who are your musical influences?

I try not to pay much attention to what other people are doing when I write songs. I don't want to hear something and think, "I want to write a song like that!" I'd rather tune into myself and let whatever comes out come out. It's much more rewarding I think to not put limitations on yourself by wanting to write like someone else.

But with that said I love the way Cat Stevens, John Lennon, and Sigur Ros wrote songs. There music has an incredible presence that helps me feel the purpose in what I write.

What is your musical background like?

Having grown up in New Orleans I was around music all the time. On the streets, in clubs, from my parents, etc... That got me interested and then I started playing bass and guitar and figured it out as I went. The same thing happened with piano. I played percussion for the high school band but that's the only schooling I've had in music. That taught me that I didn't want to be taught haha!

Any other members in your family that are musicians?

No, not really. My dad played guitar when he was younger but there wasn't really any overlap because he had pretty much stopped by the time I was born.

What is the top reason why you want to play music?

Because there's nothing else I can see myself doing. There is no fall back plan and there is no other thing I'd want to do with my life. If I didn't write something everyday I would be a miserable wreck haha! It's the most rewarding thing I could ever do.

What has been your best show?

Wow, there have been a lot of incredibly fun shows but I think the best show was a few months after Hurricane Katrina with the same band as my most embarrassing show.

It was at a place in Metairie, the next parish over from New Orleans, and all of our friends showed up. There was an incredible feeling of community, and purpose, and "It's alright what happened because we're here together and we're playing music again." Everybody in the band and in the audience were putting out an incredible energy that was just unreal.
