Interview: Jon Bellion

What got you started in this business?
To be honest man I stumbled upon the whole artist thing... it kind of just worked. I hated how
people sounded on my beats (starting as a producer) and literally just "gave singing and rapping a
shot"... people took well to it and BAM!
Who writes and produces all of your material?
Me! I mix, write, produce, and compose everything. If no one likes my music I can't be like "blame
it on my sh---y producer" haha.
Have you played in front of or with any acts our readers would
know from the mainstream?
We did a show recently and opened up for Joe Budden which was pretty cool... got to spit for him
with my buddy...
Where can people access your music on the web?
Jonbellion.com! It has got a ton
of videos, new songs, and the first mixtape I released about a year and a half ago... so blessed
for anyone to check that out!
Any embarrassing moments on stage?
That's the story of my life, when you first start out and find yourself on stage you always need to
experience things that bring your ass back down to earth! We had a show at Sullivan Hall recently...
a friend I do music with and is a part of the "beautiful mind" camp called my label mates up for a
"take a bow" moment and the set wasn't even over.
Any good stories you want to tell us?
Honestly man my whole journey is one great story... to see this whole thing come into fruition and
see my dreams unfold every day is the greatest, most humbling experience in the world... I'm not
really an exciting dude, haha; I make music every day and love to explore in the studio... the rest
is secondary... music comes fist.
Who are your musical influences?
Too many to name... I'm inspired when I listen to people like Andre 3000, Kanye, Imogean Heap, true
artists who set lanes and aren't afraid to be themselves.
What is your musical background like?
I have none! My family always had a piano in the house but my parents, grandparents, aunts, and
uncles don't do music! I kind of just picked up playing when I was younger and became fascinated.
My brother is an accomplished pianist and both sisters sing. But it's just us kids. No cousins? No
anything? We're like freaks of nature haha.
What is the top reason why you want to play music?
It heals me... it calms my over active mind... it's my outlet... it's how I explain who I am and
what I want to do with my life. God has blessed me with a way to express myself and I just love
doing it. I think that's why the records come out the way they do. I aim to feel good when I make
music... to make a difference? (cheesy) haha.
What has been your best show?
I did a secret show the other day in a area near my hometown. So many people came to support and
came to hang out and just listen to some acoustic guitar and harmonizing. It was such an organic
amazing show... natural and not forced. People came to relax, talk, vibe, and hear good music.
Doing this whole underground show thing is like the best idea I've ever had, it's such a great
time. Especially to see people who want to take time out of their days to come see ME, some random
musician play for them... so humbling.
