Interview: Juanita Place
What got this band together and started in this business?
Shontez and Jason met on Craigslist. They both were ready to write their own music. A mutual friend
of BJ and Shontez paired the two up, because he knew they had similar interests and they were
talented and easy going. Kyle was introduced later when BJ ran into his mom at a Target store and
she offered his services to us, "Because he was just sittin' in the basement... haha"
Who writes and produces all the material for the band?
BJ Rice is the primary writer, but Shontez and Jason has contributed on the debut album "Her Hero".
Also BJ produced the album, with help coming from Johnathan Brown for the song "Soul Superhero".
Has the band played in front of or with any acts our readers would
know from the mainstream?
JP opened for The Memorials in St Louis. Its super drummer, Thomas Pridgen's group.
Where can people access your music on the web?
www.juanitaplace.com,
www.myspace.com/juanitaplace. We're
also on Facebook as "Juanita Place", CD Baby, iTunes, Amazon and the list goes on... just search
for Juanita Place on Google!
Any embarrassing moments on stage?
BJ Rice's most embarassing moment, during an headlining night forgot the words because he had a lil
too much to drink. Shontez hit himself in the eye during a drum solo. Jason yanked his instrument
cable out mid solo. Kyle is safe for now... haha.
Who are the band's musical influences?
Everyone in the band has depth so its easy to pull from within.
What is your musical background like?
It ranges from R&B to Metallica to Jazz, Avante Garde to Bluegrass. Feel good music. We are a happy
group!
Any other members in your family that are musicians?
Too many to name... yes.
What is the top reason why you want to play music?
Its a release. And no two shows are the same.
