Interview: Ciryl

What got you started in this business?

Friends in high school, got me to bar battlin' at lunch. And since I had always been in to writing and poetry, I just expanded and learned from my boys and my girl cookie. We were close back then.

Who writes and produces all of your material?

I write everything, I'll admit I have brainstorming sessions with the crew and even Big Mike about things to talk about but I really take pride in writing my own lyrics. As for producers the first album we were confined to one producer due to lack of funding, luckily it was my boy and one of me favorite producers, Nstmntl. For my next project I hope to add a new team.

Have you played in front of or with any acts our readers would know from the mainstream?

When we did the Juneteenth Fest we had some big names out there, Common and Erika Bahdu, Ben One and others it was nice. Oh and we were down in Atlanta performing with Freeway Saigon Big Kritt 9th Wonder, Cory Gunz and my favorite right now: Yonas from New York.

Where can people access your music on the web?

Google, ReverbNation, MySpace, Amazon, Napster etc. It feels like I'm everywhere.

Any embarrassing moments on stage?

We had a couple malfunctions, let's not get into it, but they definitely make you a stronger artist.

Any good stories you want to tell us?

Recording for the first album, me and Big Mike became more like family. There was one day that I actually though we were going to start throwing punches but by the end of the night we were hugging! We be like that all the time...

Who are your musical influences?

Eminem, Dipset, Pac Biggy, Lil Wayne, Drake, T.I., Jada and my boys.

What is your musical background like?

S--t - not much. I learned everything on the spot and the older cats would help me follow through on it. Just a lot of practice with my old crew.

Any other members in your family that are musicians?

My lil cuzo is a rapper to and my lil nephew is just starting out. My lil sis is a singer. She's determined! So hopefully I could help her too.

What is the top reason why you want to play music?

I want to do it for me. I've been getting restless with my own lack of success. I'm my hardest critic so even though I say it's for the fans and for my family and future (which it is) but I think ego and self loathing got a lot to do with it.

What has been your best show?

The Barn, hands down, in Willowbrook. It was me and Big Mike's first dual project and I absolutely loved it. That was a great night!
