Obituary of Florentina Mastogaci

When I met Florentina Mastogaci people argued about the spelling of her last name. "There are two Cs," one cried. Another said, "It's Florantina not Forentina," and I recall those arguments ended in fisticuffs.

But through her lifetime people always found controversy from the thoroughly misspelled Florentina Mastogaci. If it wasn't the given or family names causing conflict it was something else.

Florentina Mastogaci was different than others and others did not like that. One Easter there were twenty men standing in line to propose marriage. One by one she accepted. None of the men liked that so they fought each other with knives and clubs and pistols and knuckles. Some were injured. Some died.

Women in the village hated her for many petty reasons and formed a club to raid her home and beat her and her pet kangaroo senseless. They failed and were exiled to an island in the island of Novaya Zemlya.

One person wanted Florentina Mastogaci to run for mayor of her village. That man was drawn and quartered by interlopers with whips who would do such things for money.

I fell in love with Florentina in the spring of naught-four or naught when the naught nights were steamy with affection. She said she loved me even more than she loved her kangaroo so I jumped at chance to propose marriage. She accepted. But before the marriage she came down with a case of severe dread and began to suffer from involuntary drooling and toe infections and binary w eakness of the knees. It worsened the more I told her I loved her enough to stay with her always. Then she died.

To this day I am accused of killing her and at the same time praised for doing so. Perhaps I did not understand Florentina. Perhaps my love was too strong for her. Or perhaps she saw me coming out of the shower and wretched.

Rest in peace.
