Interview: Culture Killers

What got this band together and started in this business?

After the bass player dedided to quit Moaning Lisa (my previous band) we decided to start fresh with a new name, new songs, new attitude. Delta Starr and I have played together for years and seem to work well together so we decided it would work out for us to continue.

Who writes and produces all the material for the band?

I tend to write the majority of the material, generally at home on my acoustic. I'll do some home demos and then bring them to the band. Then we will get together and start working it into a Cutlure Killers' song. Other members also bring in ideas and we work them out till we have a good semblance of a song.

Our EP was produced by the band and Rob Beaton. Rob has worked with Santana, Van Halen, Mic Jagger, and others. He had a great ear for what we are doing and gave us an amazing sounding EP.

Any embarrassing moments on stage?

Not recently, but the show in Cincinatti back in Moaning Lisa when I fell off the stage and split my pants while going commando was a good memory!

How did the band get together?

Moaning Lisa moved to LA from Kansas City in 2004. After a few years and a few more members, our bass player decided he couldn't do it anymore and quit one night while we were recording a cover song for a tour package we were working on. Since we had just brought on a new drummer we decided that we should change the name find a new bassist and go from there. And we did!

What is your musical background like?

Hmmmm... diverse. I grew up on pop (genre) radio. My father loved to sing Chantilly Lace all the time! We had the radio on constantly, all of us singing. I started playing piano around 3 and went on to study theory in college but grew bored with it when I discovered keggers were more interesting than sitting in a little practice room every night!

Any other members in your family that are musicians?

My grandfather was in big bands back in the day: Speck and the Snappy Syncopaters. My aunt use to play a little piano.

What is the TOP reason why you want to play music?

The rush I get out of it. The accomplishment after I've written something and then recording it so people can hear it. Also, being on stage in front of a crowd of people there to listen to my music!
