Interview: Culture Killers

What is the process of making a CD?

What do you mean? A little elf sits in a magic tree where he waves his magic wand over a plastic shiny frisbee-like disc and music magically appears to the wonders of the listener... next.

How do you get the word out about your music?

There are many means to promote. The internet is the most obvious. Nowadays, it's not really about the CD anymore. It's about the music, the band, the merch, the brand. You are selling the whole package, not just the CD.

How do you think times like the economic recession is affecting musicians like yourself?

It makes touring near impossible for an unknown artist. And less people go to shows or buy merchandise, the lifeblood of an artist.

What is the toughest lesson you ever learned in the studio and on the stage?

Patience. And if you've rehearsed and are confident in your ability it will make all the difference in your performance on stage or in the studio. You won't be wasting anyone else's time.

What is a live performance like?

I live to be on stage. The rush that comes from performing in front of a crowd of people that are there to listen to you is empowering and a massive confidence booster! Sometimes the preshow anxiety can be so overwhelming, but once that first chord is hit it all falls the way side and you fall into the moment. That moment, is what it's all about to me.

What does the band have planned in the coming months?

We are currently recording a remake of the Steppenwolf classic "Magic Carpet Ride" for the Fremont Street Experience in Las Vegas. It's the largest video screen in the world where 20 million people a year visit! Last year we did a version of "Born To Be Wild" and since it was such a success they have asked us to add to it! It should debut sometime in the spring!

What is your latest album and why should people buy it?

The Culture Killer EP is available through iTunes I believe. It's currently on Delvue Records where I think you might be able to purchase it at delvuerecords.com. People should buy it cause it's damn good! Great tunes! Great energy!

Can you share with us one or two of your favorite moments with the band?

Standing on stage in Las Vegas on Fremont Street looking up to the big screen for the debut of "Born To Be Wild" knowing that over the next 3 years the show is up there... up to 60 million people might be looking at my big head up on that screen!

Getting asked if the new movie Tekken could use "Let Me Drive" for use in the movie, though I'm not sure if it is in it though...

Tell us about your local music scene?

Los Angeles, unfortunately, has become such a cesspool of bad bands and money hungry clubs that there is very little support towards local bands. It's all become very back stabbing and bitter. Pay-to-play seems to still cripple the scene. A good friend of mine and Culture Killers, Dayle Gloria, has been around since Jane's Addiction was her house band at a club she ran back in the day. She loves music and she loves finding the newest and coolest bands. She does a night (Wednesday) at The Dragonfly in Hollywood with amazing local bands. She is a huge supporter. If you're in LA make sure you check out her night.

Do you have any last comments or words of advice for our readers?

Keep to your guns and do what you do because you love doing what you do. It's not rocket science but it does take a little effort and knowledge of the "music business" to make it happen. Support your local music. Go out to shows buy their stuff at shows or on line. Tell the world about the bands you like. They'll appreciate it.
