Interview: ALUNA (Page 2)

Any good stories you want to tell us?

Adam: We play in a space where there are regularly people coming in and out while we practice. This day, we had a promoter named Dave Merschbrock coming to meet us and hear us at practice. While we're practicing, a couple of people come in and listen to us, like usual. We finish our set and sit down and chit-chat with the people and after about 5 minutes, I casually ask "when's this dave guy getting here?" I felt really stupid when one of the people we were talking to raised his hand and said "now". Mike and Nick will never let me live that down...

Who are the band's musical influences?

Nick: We all have different favorite groups in the band. For me, it's a lot of hard rock and metal. Stuff that has heart in it.

What is your musical background like?

Nick: I started playing guitar when I was 11 and haven't stopped yet. Since then, I have been in bands my whole life.

Adam: I started playing bass in the 4th grade when our bassist dropped out. I was tired of playing saxophone. I bought my first bass about 2 months later and ended up falling asleep while practicing blues lines. I played in the most popular hard rock band in the area in high school, did some session recording work, and then took a 4-year-long hiatus while I was in college. When I moved to Kansas City, I thought that it would be cool to be in a band again and joined up with a fairly well-established local indie-pop band. I ended up going to college back in Vermont for another year and dropped out of that band. When I returned, I thought that I had been away from music long enough. That's when I started searching Craigslist...

Any other members in your family that are musicians?

Nick: My brother is a pretty good drummer. My grandfather and grandmother were singers and my mom was in an orchestra for a while.

Adam: My entire family is pretty musical. My mom was an opera singer and music major in college; my mom and dad met in all-state chorus. And both of my younger brothers both play guitar. My brothers and I can still be heard jamming at neighborhood-rattling volumes from time to time.

What is the top reason why you want to play music?

Nick: I love it, I write these songs and the reaction we get from the fans at shows keeps me inspired.

Adam: I get asked this question a lot. Actually, the best reason for me is that there is no reason for me - most musicians end up poor! But, even knowing that, there is still something inside me that NEEDS to play music. I think it's how I express myself, get my creative juices flowing, whatever. Plus, it has been said that chicks dig guys in a band, haha.

What has been your best show?

Nick: We played a show at the Beaumont Club a a while back, it was an awesome venue to play, I have seen some great shows there, we rocked very hard and the sound was great and ended up catching the attention of some big names in the music business.

Adam: Definitely the Beaumont Club... cool venue, great music festival, awesome sound. I love the feeling of being on stage and feeling my legs vibrate as the bass and drums rock out. Didn't hurt that I went back the next day and, as I'm in the bathroom, I hear some people talking about how hard our band rocked last night!
