The Eupetaurus cinereus - a flying squirrel considered extinct - was found alive this year in India.
One of the the species of woolly flying squirrels which were plentiful in the area for centuries
was documented as living on the cliffs of Himachal Pradesh in the country's northern region.

"The woolly squirrel discovered was photographed," said a local forest ranger, "and it was
identified while it was running away from a snow leopard that was hunting for food."

The woolly squirrel - now named Rocky by locals - was being chased by the snow leopard and had to
jump from a cliff to escape. It was photographed while it glided effortlessly through the air.
The snow leopard tried to fly after it, "but snow leopards cannot fly and hardly know that so the
hunt ended when it fell to its death," said the ranger.

"Rocky is identical to its woolly ancestors," said a spokesman, "but we cannot officially call him
Rocky The Flying Squirrel or we will be sued by the creators of the famous cartoon character. We
considered naming him Rocky The Woolly Airborne Squirrel but didn't like the sound of that. And we
cannot call him Eupetaurus cinereus because it isn't catchy enough for the common person."

Only one Rocky ancestor was identified in the 90s but it was sure that the identifier told the
truth. "He was a known fibber and the term Eupetaurus cinereus rolled off his tongue too easily
for him to be telling the truth," the spokesman said.
